Summer 2024 SHARE Virtual Apprenticeship Description Submission Form

UConn faculty in social sciences, humanities, and arts disciplines who are interested in mentoring early career undergraduate researchers are invited to submit a virtual research apprenticeship to be included in the Summer 2024 SHARE Virtual Research Apprenticeship program.

The Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) will develop an opportunity description and application based on the information you submit.

Please Note: Depending on faculty interest, we may not be able to support all submitted research apprenticeships. Should we receive more faculty requests than we can accommodate, the decision not to include the opportunity in this program will be communicated to faculty by OUR staff.

More details on the program, eligibility, timeline, and award conditions can be found at https://ugradresearch.uconn.edu/share-summer-faculty/.

If you have questions about the SHARE program, please contact Melissa Berkey, Assistant Director in the Office of Undergraduate Research, at melissa.berkey@uconn.edu.

The content you provide in response to the following questions will be used to describe your SHARE apprenticeship.

Providing a detailed description of your research or project, the ways in which a SHARE apprentice can contribute, and your preferred time commitment will help students evaluate their fit for your apprenticeship and to prepare a strong application. For reference, you can view previous summer apprenticeship descriptions in the opportunity archive to see what information is typically included in the apprenticeship postings.

Please review the SHARE Virtual Summer Research Apprenticeship program details and faculty mentor terms and conditions. Participation in the SHARE Virtual Summer Research Apprenticeship Program requires that you agree to the faculty mentor terms and conditions outlined below.

SHARE Virtual Summer Research Apprenticeship Program Details

Program Modality

  • This is a virtual research apprenticeship program. Apprentices are not expected to engage in any in-person work; all research activities should be conducted remotely.
  • Faculty must be available to virtually mentor the student apprentice over the summer and provide a substantive learning experience that allows students to develop foundational research skills and gain a greater understanding of the research process.
Apprentice Eligibility and Selection
  • Eligibility is limited to undergraduates in their first, second, and third year of study who are majoring in a social science, humanities, and/or arts field.
  • This program prioritizes early career students with little or no prior research experience, as well as students from underrepresented backgrounds and 1st generation students. We ask that faculty keep the intentions of the program in mind when reviewing applications and selecting candidates.
  • This program is intended to foster new student-faculty connections. Faculty mentors agree to select a student they are not currently working with and/or have not previously worked with in a research capacity.
Compensation and Hours
  • Research apprentices earn up to $1,425, paid as hourly wages. To earn the full $1,425 award, apprentices will need to work approximately 90 hours over the course of the summer.
  • SHARE apprentices are considered temporary, hourly workers and will only be paid for actual hours worked. Apprentices must enter their hours worked biweekly through the Core-CT system.
    • Please note, students cannot exceed 40 hours per pay week. Faculty mentors will not be able to see reported time in Core-CT, though you will be given access to a shared tracking spreadsheet that allows you to view your apprentice’s reported time.
  • Faculty mentors and SHARE apprentices work together to determine a mutually agreeable summer work schedule. Please bear in mind that the following activities must be considered work time:
    • Time spent on training, including CITI Training
    • Meeting times, whether research group meetings or one-on-one meetings
    • Time spent completing the required SHARE program reflections (beginning of the experience, mid-point, and final reflection).
  • In recognition of the commitment to mentoring a SHARE apprentice, faculty mentors will receive a $500 professional development stipend at the start of the summer.
    • Please note, the professional development funding will be transferred to the ledger 2 KFS account provided by the faculty mentor. Please consult with your fiscal officer about your school or college’s fiscal close procedures; typically, these funds will need to be spent by June 2024, prior to the close of the current fiscal year unless they have been moved into an account that will not be swept at the fiscal year close.
  • SHARE apprentices are required to present their research at the Frontiers in Undergraduate Research Poster Exhibition in October or April. OUR will provide coaching to apprentices to assist them with preparing a poster for Frontiers. We ask that mentors also provide guidance to support them with this task. Poster printing costs for SHARE apprentices will be covered by the SHARE program.
Training and Research Approvals
  • For projects involving human subjects, documentation of IRB approval or of a completed IRB protocol submission must be submitted to OUR prior to the start of the apprenticeship. Please plan your IRB timeline accordingly.
    • Apprentices cannot engage in research activities that are covered by an IRB protocol until documentation of approval has been submitted to the OUR.
  • If applicable, participation in required training (e.g., CITI Training) is considered work time and should be reported on timecards. Students should not complete training prior to being officially hired by SHARE/Enrichment Programs or prior to the start of the SHARE employment period.

SHARE Faculty Mentor Terms and Conditions:
  • This program is intended to foster new student-faculty connections. Faculty mentors agree to select a student they are not currently working with and/or have not previously worked with in a research capacity.
  • Faculty mentors agree to provide sufficient substantive tasks and duties for the student apprentice to earn their full award and satisfy the anticipated apprenticeship time commitment.
  • Faculty mentors will work with their apprentice to determine a mutually agreeable summer work schedule.
  • Faculty mentors will ensure the student apprentice has received orientation and training relative to the requirements and responsibilities of their SHARE apprenticeship, and if applicable, that they are added to any pertinent research compliance protocols.
  • Faculty mentors agree to provide oversight and feedback to the student on their work throughout the project.
  • Faculty mentors agree to complete a monthly checklist indicating the tasks their student apprentice has worked on. The link to the checklist will be emailed to faculty mentors at the beginning of the month.
  • Faculty mentors agree to complete a student apprentice assessment form at the end of the summer to offer feedback on the student’s performance and contribution to the project.
  • Faculty mentors agree to maintain contact with the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) over the summer and notify OUR if there are any issues or concerns relating to their SHARE apprentice.
  • If performance issues arise during the SHARE summer program, faculty mentors agree to contact the OUR. OUR will work with faculty mentors to assure student employment policies found in the Student Employment Guide (https://studentjobs.uconn.edu/employment-guide/) are followed, including the Progressive Disciplinary Policy.
